Dr. Vickman has had a distinguished career in clinical practice and in health care consulting. His clinical practice includes family practice (1972-1975), emergency medicine (1976-1994) rehabilitative medicine, (2003-2004). He has provided consultations to individual physicians, small and larger medical groups, hospital organizations and other groups over a wide range of issues including group management, physician compensation, medical staff leadership, and dealing with physician disruptive behavior (1996-2004). Dr. Vickman personally experienced the ravages of medical practice as an emergency physician. In 1994 he stopped clinical practice and took a sabbatical in Barcelona, Spain with his family. This experience was not only a healing one, but it gave him a greater appreciation for the issues all physicians face as practitioners. Dr. Vickman began to speak and write on topics related to physician wellbeing and burnout after the sabbatical. He has published a number of articles on the topic and has spoken to a varied group of audiences including students, residents, practicing physicians, and spousal groups on this and related issues, both locally, regionally, and nationally. Dr. Vickman has been the editor of the Wellbeing Section Newsletter of ACEP (1999-2003). He has been selected by ACEP staff for referrals requested by Emergency Physicians who are experiencing burnout and he provides counseling and support for those physicians. His skills and abilities to do this work come from a profound interest and passion for physician wellness, and interest in burnout and from years of clinical experience as a physician.
