Malpractice Risk Reduction in Medical Practices

Course Overview:

This presentation will focus on issues related to patient satisfaction and how it relates to risk reduction in the physician-patient interaction.  The various roles for physicians, as well as social forces that increase risk in the physician-patient interaction, will be discussed.  The differing expectations of patients, families and physicians will also be reviewed, along with differing perspectives on quality. The determinants of satisfaction are described for patients, families, and for physicians. Risk reduction is tied to creating satisfaction.

Course Objectives:

The attendees of this program will learn the following in this program:

 

Attendees of this program will learn about the multiple and often conflicting roles that physicians face today.

 

Attendees will develop a better understanding of social forces that contribute to increased risk and the role fear plays in our interactions.

 

Attendees will learn the differences in the perception of quality between patients, families and physicians.

 

Attendees will develop a better understanding of the differences in expectations of patients and the physician in a doctor-patient interaction and how that affects risk.

 

Attendees will see a method for improving the relationship with their patients as a tool for risk reduction.

 

This program can be used in conjunction with or in combination with other aspects of existing medical malpractice liability insurer programs for risk reduction.

Physicians currently insured by sponsoring organization and other potential insureds.

 

Non-physician caregivers: nurses, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners

 

Hospital administrators

Methodology:

 

Lecture material is interspersed with much personal experience as a practitioner, and is interactive with the audience

 

Physician presenter has the ability to be more direct with physicians and their issues

 

Issues relating to physician behavior addressed openly and directly without judgment

 

This presentation could be given in conjunction with other presenters, e.g., legal counsel or insurance company staff experienced in these matters.

Program Modules:

   

Module 1: Multiple physician roles and the social stressors today.

 

 

Module 2: The differences between patient, family, and physician expectations about quality, expectations, and managing dissatisfaction.

Presentation Timeframe:

    This course is designed for a two-hour session.

Handouts:

    Presentation transparencies will be copied as an adjunct to note taking.

Equipment Needed:

Overhead transparency projector, screen, whiteboard or flip chart.
